Art infinitum for inmates
The Kathmandu Post – 5 November 2007
“Best of Infinity,” the exhibition of fifteen paintings by trio – Binod Kumar Gupta, Ramesh KC, Gaurav Shrestha – of Infinity Group has kicked off at Lazimpat Gallery Cafe, Lazimpat from Sunday, November 4.
Fifteen paintings – five by each painter – are allegedly the selected few works of the group which had already been exhibited before. If so, one may be surprised how did those “best” works survived the eyes of the customers. Gaurav has a prompt answer, “That is because these are the good paintings that went unheeded by the buyers. So, we’ve once again opened up the treasure chest to lure the art lovers.”
Ramesh adds wittily, “Artists always create the art to enrich the humanity. Therefore, these good paintings must go to the hands of art aficionados than to rot in the cold studio of a painter.”
As usual, Gaurav this time too has come up with collages, Ramesh with semi-abstract paintings and Binod has not abandoned his realistic theme, either. Almost all paintings are dominated with Kathmanduite landscape. This is probably because, as Binod explains, all of them have been residing in Kathmandu for long time. The stagnancy of the motif certainly has made the exhibition monotonous at one point.
The fifth exhibition of the group displays paintings executed in acrylic, oil, watercolor and collage.
The exhibition inaugurated by Indira Rana, chairperson of Prisoners Assistance Nepal (PAN) will give certain amount of its proceedings to the organization.
PAN has been working for the past eighteen years to adjust and reintegrate the children of the inmates. Rana, who had come to the exhibition with twelve-year-old Nima Waiba, one among one hundred and eighteen reintegrated children who is also quite a good painter, hopes to organize such art exhibition by the children of PAN with the fund thus collected.
Recently, PAN has been supporting eighty-two children in its boarding house and supporting fifty-two children in the community. The main objective of the organization is to rehabilitate the ex-inmates, protect them from social stigma and to some extent provide paralegal advices.
